The Love-Philtre of Ikey Schoenstein by O. Henry (1906)

"Good evening sir, I'd like some of your finest laudanum to cure this nagging headache."

The title is definitely a mouth-full. Also, philtre is a fancy word for potion.

More than a century before M. Night Shyamalan started making movies and becoming synonymous with his "twist endings", O. Henry was the undisputed master of this storytelling technique. The unfortunate downside is that many of these stories aren't necessarily worth revisiting because after the big reveal, the main allure is gone. Moreover, it can become quite gimmicky and redundant. Nevertheless, there are still occasions when I find enjoyment in them, as the element of surprise can offer a thrilling entertainment factor. This is definitely the case with this story, which involves a pharmacist and one of his customers who are both in love with the same woman. As the narrative hinges primarily on its plot twist, delving into further specifics would spoil the fun of discovering it on your own. Is this story worth reading again? Probably not. But it's certainly entertaining and makes me want to continue binge-reading more works by this prolific author.
